Abuse Prevention Training
One of Voices Carry Child Advocacy Center’s missions is to prevent child abuse in northern Colorado and we do this through education. We want to teach both children and adults to recognize, refuse and report unsafe situations, and behaviors as they see them. Find out more about the trainings, education series, and special events on abuse prevention provided by VCCAC.
What We Do
Forensic Services
Voices Carry Child Advocacy Center is the only agency in Larimer and Jackson Counties that is accredited by the National Children’s Alliance. We provide a safe and comfortable space for children who are involved in current child abuse investigations without the need to tell the details of their abuse more than once. When law enforcement and child protection agencies have an open child abuse investigation, they turn to us to perform specialized forensic interviews. When families come to our facility, our Family Advocates will meet with child victims’ non-offending caregivers to provide resources to begin their next step of healing. To learn more, please visit out Forensic Services page.
Abuse Prevention
In addition to Forensic Services, our agency also provides child abuse prevention programs. We provide an extensive K-4 curriculum to teach children about general safety rules as well as how to recognize, refuse and report unsafe and unwanted touches. We also provide a child abuse prevention programs to adults who want to learn to prevent, recognize and react responsibly to child abuse. To learn more about prevention, Please visit our Abuse Prevention for Adults or Abuse Prevention for Children pages.
Why it Matters
Child abuse and molestation happen in our community more often than you may realize.
- One in 10 children will be a victim of sexual abuse before the age of 18.
- More than 90% of sexually abused children know the offender.
- Only about one third of child sexual abuse incidents are identified. Fewer are reported.
- In 2019, Voices Carry conducted 311 forensic interviews and provided advocacy services to 320 non-offending caregivers–a small fraction of the victims and families affected by child abuse in our community.
- In 2018, the Department of Human Services assessed over 2,000 suspected victims of child abuse in Larimer County.
- The Center for Disease Control estimates that child maltreatment victims who don’t receive intervention or care will cost a community over $233,000 (2018 dollars) each in additional physical and mental healthcare costs, social services support, and lost productivity.
